We had to choose our motifs that we would use.  Tracey Tawhiao uses fish and butterflies along with other patterns.  We chose stars for Kingitanga and the Te Paaki o Matariki Niupepa that was produced at Maungakawa.  We chose M for Maungakawa. We chose trees which kind of look like arrows. We chose tui for all the tui that are on Maungakawa.

Our teacher told us that Tracey Tawhiao likes to use newspapers form different places in the world. We used newspapers from different times that we had found in our research but ones that had articles about Maungakawa in them.

We had to choose a colour palette for our artwork. We found a painting where Tracey Tawhiao had used contrasting colours instead of the same colour palette. We each chose a colour.

Our teacher talked to us about Tracey Tawhiao and her paintings.  We looked at lots and lots of her painting and made a list of the things we liked.  We also tried to work out what was the same in every painting. Our teacher asked us to think about what Tracey Tawhiao was trying to say to the people that looked at her paintings.

We have been working hard to find out everything we could about Maungakawa. Our key words for searching were Ngati Haua, Tawhiao, Tamihana, Fencourt, Thornton, Rewehetiki, Cambridge, Sanitorium.

We had to sort all the research we had done in to three categories:

- The Iwi Story (the historical/cultural significance of the site.)

- The In Between Story (The site as it is now and events that contributed to this.)

- The Aspiration Story (aspirations for the site post Treaty Settlement.)

First we sorted the research.  Then we justified why each piece was in each category and rearranged it if we needed to.
